Illustration engraved by N. Orr Co.
"This booklet was also issued with black cloth covers, blind stamped in a dice pattern with corner ornaments, and lettered 'Beadle's Biographical Library, No. 1, Garibaldi.' The lining paper of the board covers and one flyleaf, front and back, are of bright yellow paper. That on the inside of the front cover carries a blurb, printed in red ink, about the Beadle Dime Handbooks. The front flyleaf, also printed in red, announces the Biographical Library. At the back, both flyleaf and inside cover are blank. There is a frontispiece showing Garibaldi on horseback. The title page gives the 141 William Street address, but there is nothing to show whether or not this is a first edition. The copyright notice on the verso of the title page is dated 1860."--Johannsen, A. House of Beadle and Adams and its dime and nickel novels, volume 1, page 369, no. 1.
Includes an inscription on the recto of the frontispiece to the Philomathean Society, dated 1867.
